One of the ways we love to gather here at Oaks Christian Online is through reading together. This school year we have four virtual book clubs; if you’re interested, check them out below.
Once you have read through the descriptions, be sure to scroll to the bottom to see how you could win a free book!!
Middle School Book Club:
Out of twelve books to choose from, Heat by Mike Lupica is the one the majority of our middle school students selected to read! Chaplain Samantha Farinacci and one of our full-time high school seniors are excited to lead this book club on November 11 at 12pm PST. Here’s a short summary:
Michael Arroyo has a pitching arm that throws serious heat along with aspirations of leading his team all the way to the Little League World Series. But his firepower is nothing compared to the heat Michael faces in his day-to-day life. Newly orphaned after his father led the family’s escape from Cuba, Michael’s only family is his seventeen-year-old brother Carlos. — Good Reads
High School Book Club:
Also lead by our Oaks Christian Online chaplain and one of our full-time seniors, this book, News of the World by Paulette Jiles, was a strong pick for many students including one who excitedly announced “my parents just watched the movie a few weeks ago!” when she saw this was an option. Here’s a quick overview:
In the aftermath of the Civil War, an aging itinerant news reader agrees to transport a young captive of the Kiowa back to her people in this exquisitely rendered, morally complex, multilayered novel of historical fiction…that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust. — Good Reads
Faculty & Parents Book Club #1:
Written by a mother and son, This Child of Faith: Raising a Spiritual Child in a Secular World, will hopefully give our faculty and parents an opportunity to share what it’s like to care for teenagers in the midst of difficult times. The book club meets 3 times throughout the year on
Tuesday October 19 at 12noon PST,
Tuesday January 11 at 12noon PST, and
Tuesday April 5 at 12noon PST
and will hopefully create a nourishing space for community. Here’s what the book is about:
This is a fascinating look at the journey of two souls, both Tain’s and his mother’s, that began with Tain enrolling in Sunday School and led to a strong life of faith for both of them….Sophfronia and Tain share stories, experience and ideas to help parents get to the heart of the question: How do you help a child have faith—real faith that they own—in the challenging world we live in today? — Good Reads
Faculty & Parents Book Club #2:
Grounded in extensive research, 3 Big Questions That Change Every Teenager will help parents and teachers share honestly about the joys and challenges of intergenerational conversations. This book club meets 4 times throughout the year on Tuesday October 19 at 3:30pm PST,
Tuesday December 7 at 3:30pm PST,
Tuesday January 25 at 3:30pm PST, and
Tuesday March 15 at 3:30pm PST.
We hope this will be a great space to learn together about how to gracefully come alongside teenagers as they ask the questions that matter most to them. Here’s what the book is about:
Today’s teenagers are the most anxious, creative, and diverse generation in history–which can make it hard for us to relate. And while every teenager is a walking bundle of questions, three rise above the rest: 1) Who am I? 2) Where do I fit? 3) What difference can I make? — Good Reads
